Course Overview
Our Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM) training course lasts for five days. It is a complete program. It helps participants gain the knowledge and skills they need. They will learn to prepare and design complex Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs).
This face-to-face advanced traffic management course meets Main Roads WA accreditation requirements. It is designed for professionals in traffic management or road planning.
The course is for people who need to create, review, monitor and adjust Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes. This is important for planning, as stated in AS1742.3. Part 3 – 2019 and the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (AGTTM). This includes Traffic Planners, Project Managers, Engineers, and Approving Officers involved in roadworks, construction, or infrastructure projects.
Participants will take part in discussions, workshops, and hands-on activities about TMP and TGS design during the course.
The final day is about starting the submission-based assessment tasks. Participants can begin working on their traffic management plans with help from the trainer. You must complete and submit these final assessments within one month of the course’s end date.

Accreditation & Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and assessment requirements, participants will receive:
- Main Roads WA Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM) Accreditation Card (valid for 3 years
- Main Roads WA Certificate of Completion
- Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in the following Units of Competency:
- RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process
- RIICWD503E Prepare traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
Certificates for participants within the Perth metro area will be issued within three working days of course completion. Regional participants should allow for additional processing time.
Course Content
This course covers the full suite of knowledge and skills required to create effective, legally compliant TMPs and TGSs. Topics include:
- Legal and regulatory requirements including MRWA Road Traffic Code 2000 and Traffic Management for works on Roads CODE of Practice.
- Site analysis and data collection methods
- Road user safety considerations
- Risk management, hazard identification, treatment options, analysis and risk assessments
- Advanced traffic management theory and best practices
- Layout and design principles for TGSs
- Tools and techniques for developing TMPs
- Navigating and applying Austroads AGTTM documentation (Parts 1 to 10)
- Applying AS1742.3 Part 3 – 2019 in plan preparation
- Audit preparation and documentation
Pre-Course Requirements
Before enrolling, all participants must meet the following prerequisites:
Personal Requirements:
- A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) – can be applied for at www.usi.gov.au or find out more on our website.
- Government-issued Photo ID (Driver’s Licence, Passport, etc.)
- Sufficient English literacy and communication skills to interpret legislation, complete written safety documents, and engage in group discussions.
- Sufficient Digital Skills to proficiently use a personal computer, including Microsoft Office.
- Access to a laptop with Office installed and internet capability.
- Complete a course suitability checklist for this course including Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills as applicable.
Main Roads WA Prerequisites:
- Hold or have previously held a Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) accreditation, including RIIWHS302E or its equivalent
- Possess a current White Card (or Blue Card) for general construction induction
- Provide verifiable evidence of at least 12 months of practical experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Traffic management
- Road design, safety or asset management
- Road construction or maintenance
Evidence must be provided through either:
- A Letter or Third-Party Report from a current or former employer, or
- Details of three worksites with site supervisor contact information for verification
If you do not currently meet these prerequisites, you may be eligible for the new MRWA Accreditation: Advanced Worksite Traffic Management – Non-Practitioner (AWTM-NP). This accreditation was introduced in Western Australia during March 2025. The AWTM-NP doesn’t include the Main Roads WA entry requirements. Refer to the course outline for further details on our website.
Alternatively, we recommend completing our Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) and White Card training courses prior to enrolment.
Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills (LLND)
Participants must have the following foundation LLND skills to succeed in the course:
- Reading: Ability to interpret technical documents, policies, legislative text, and TMP templates
- Writing: Ability to complete compliance reports and create risk matrices using correct grammar and structure
- Digital Skills: Ability to produce Traffic Management Plans using a PC and access website information
- Oral Communication: Ability to communicate clearly using industry-specific terminology and confirm understanding through active listening
Learning Tools & Equipment
To ensure full participation and success, all attendees must bring:
- A laptop with Microsoft Office and reliable internet access (WiFi is provided)
- If possible, access to a drawing or drafting software (not essential but helpful for plan preparation)
- AS1742.3 – 2019 and Austroads AGTTM Parts 1–10 (hard or digital copies)
- A Hi-Vis shirt or vest for the site inspection component

We provide catering for most of our public training courses. For this course we will provide morning tea, lunch, and continuous tea and coffee. If you have dietary requirements, please inform our team upon enrolment and we will make appropriate arrangements.
Funding Support – Construction Training Fund (CTF)

Eligible workers employed in Western Australia’s construction and civil industries may be able to claim a subsidy through the Construction Training Fund (CTF).

How long is my MRWA Traffic Management Accreditation valid for?
Your MRWA Traffic Management Accreditation is valid for three (3) years from the date of issue.
After the 3-year period you must complete a re-accreditation/renewal course. Should your card have expired over 3 months ago you will need to undertake the full course.
I have lost my White Card how can I have it replaced?
If you have lost your White Card and completed your training with Kelyn Training Services, please contact us. We can issue a replacement White Card, provided your original card is still valid. A replacement fee of $50.00 applies and must be paid at the time of application.
I have Traffic Management Accreditation from another State. Can I have it recognised in Western Australia?
If you hold Temporary Traffic Management Accreditation from another state, please contact us and provide evidence of your accreditation, along with the Statement of Attainment issued by the relevant Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or Authorised Body. Once received, we will review your documentation and advise you on the most appropriate next steps.
