Course Overview

The Advanced Worksite Traffic Management – Non-Practitioner (AWTM-NP) course is for professionals who manage traffic. These professionals generally do not work directly on road sites. This course suits anyone who reviews, monitors implementation of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) or undertakes surveillance.  Alternatively, this professional development course is also applicable for anyone who would like to gain further knowledge of Temporary Traffic Management.

Main Roads WA introduced this accreditation in March 2025. It was announced in the updated Traffic Management for Works on Roads Code of Practice. The course supports people working in roles such as approving officers, engineers, and local government officers.

This AWTM Non-Practitioner training course aligns with the AGTTM Accreditation TMD-NP, as outlined in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management Part 8. It focuses on learning the skills and knowledge, without the need for post-course assignments.

Who Should Attend

This course is for professionals who work in road planning, safety or design and have a keen interest in further training. This traffic management training is suited for:

  • Local Government staff
  • Main Roads WA and Road Authorities
  • Approving Officers
  • Consultants and Engineers
  • Compliance or surveillance roles
  • Anyone seeking professional development in traffic management

If your job involves checking traffic management documents, approving plans, or observing compliance on site, this course will provide the skills and recognition you need.

Accreditation & Certification

On successful completion of the course, you’ll receive:

  • Main Roads WA AWTM-NP Certificate
  • Photo ID accreditation card, valid for 3 years

We aim to issue certificates within three working days for Perth metro students. Regional participants may receive their documents slightly later.

Please note: This course does not have national accreditation. However, Main Roads Western Australia fully recognises it.

Course Content

You will learn the same traffic management theory. You will also complete the same classroom assessments as the AWTM traffic controller course. However, you will not need to complete post-course assignments. The course covers:

  • WA laws and guidelines for Temporary Traffic Management, roadworks and traffic control
  • Standards including AS1742.3 Part 3 – 2019
  • AGTTM Parts 1–10
  • How to review TMPs and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs)
  • How to monitor and report on the use of complex traffic management plans in the field
  • Risk management in traffic control
  • The responsibilities of people approving or reviewing plans

The course uses case studies, real-world examples, and group discussions. Trainers will guide you through each topic, with plenty of chances to ask questions and apply what you learn.

  • Instructor-led lessons
